WHY FEDFAM4LIFE?
Formerly incarcerated women urgently need a women-led organization to guide their reentry because they face unique challenges that require specialized support, understanding, and advocacy for a successful transition back into society.
Mass incarceration is a serious problem, and it’s most egregious for women. Over the past 30 years, the number of women in prison has increased by 860%. At this rate, 1 in 18 women will end up behind bars in their lifetime. To prove the point, juvenile women are the fastest-growing demographic in U.S. prisons.
Most women are being imprisoned or detained for low-level, nonviolent offenses or charges. Many have taken the fall for others and are serving time while their co-defendants get shorter sentences or walk free. Others are eligible for release but are being unlawfully kept behind bars.
